Toughened glass or tempered glass is processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments. It has increased strengh compared with normal glass, and will usually shatter into small fragments, therefore less likely to cause injury if broken.

Manufacture

Glass is cut to size and pressed into shape before toughening. Polishing the edges or drilling holes in the glass is carried out before the toughening process starts. Glass cannot be reworked once toughened.

Uses

The majority of ION products are manufactured using toughened glass, including frameless shower and bath screens, worktops, splashbacks, partitions, balustrades and doors. This is in line with current British Health & Safety Standards. Glass flooring and glass stair treads are usually manufactured using laminated glass (which cannot be toughened). Laminated glass provides its own strength, see our laminated glass section.
