You don't have to look far to see an example of glass used in an interior setting, and its use is increasing. From screens to splashbacks, doors to dividers, glass can be found in a myriad of finishes, including colour-coated, sandblasted, textured and tinted.
Peter Hazledean, the founder of Ion Glass, spotted the trend a few years back and set up his company to provide bespoke solutions. 'In the past, people can't have been particularly concerned about the light levels in their homes,' he says. 'With heavy wood panelling and solid doors, a sombre atmosphere must have been the norm: today, we are a generally happier bunch who like to live and work in better environments. The best way to achieve that is to take away solid structures and replace them with glass.'
Glass adds light to an interior, but isn't it delicate? 'A lot of people think glass is fragile, which is not correct,' he explains. 'Yes, it is if you mistreat it, but that's the same as everything. Once fitted, glass isn't fragile at all.' To his mind, it is the durability of glass and the versatility of its application that will encourage its continued popularity. Not to mention continued technical developments that have allowed Ion to apply images to a glass interlayer for an eight-metre-high light tower in a nightclub.
