Secure glass doors to country house entrance

Project

Creating a new glass entrance for a Sussex country home

Ion Glass worked directly with the homeowner to install a secure glass internal door and re-configure the entrance lobby to create a light, airy and welcoming entrance to the house.

Channel set fixed glass panels with a secure glass door and double glazed leaded panels

Overview

This Sussex house was built to a traditional style in the 1930’s.  A later addition to the front entrance had created a porch in front of the original oak door, losing the impact of a lovely hand-built timber door and rendering the hallway dark and uninviting.

Ion Glass designed and installed a new internal glass door between two channel set fixed glass side panels.  The original timber door was re-installed between two leaded double-glazed side panels at the front of the porch, in keeping with the style of the house.

Technical Information

The internal glass door and glass side panels are constructed from 10mm clear toughened float glass.  Fixed glass panels are channel set into the walls, floor and ceiling with an oak timber finish to the floor.

The glass door is hung off Italian Minusco Biloba hydraulic hinges for a smooth action and fixed 900 fully open position, complemented by a Dorma lock and keep which provides full security even when the external door is held open.

Externally, the original timber door has been re-hung off a timber frame with double-glazed leaded glass side panels on either side.  With 6mm toughened glass and a 16mm internal gap, the new double-glazing is significantly more robust and functional then the original leaded windows it replaced.

Ion commissioned all the timber work, with the inclusion of low voltage LED spotlights, activated by a PIR and set into the internal step.

Comments

The owners have expressed their pleasure with a result that has dramatically improved the front elevation of the house, increased the light levels in the hallway and improved the security of the front entrance.

They commented:  ‘We have used the services of Ion Glass for a number of projects throughout our home and as ever, their input has been exceptional, improving and refining our initial design concept and taking it through to completion.  Our new entrance is much more in keeping with the style of the house, creating a fantastic first impression for visitors.  With the glass door securely locked we can leave the external door open, flooding the hallway with light whilst still maintaining warmth and security.  We love working with Ion – it’s not just the technical team at the design stage, the installers are hugely experienced and a pleasure to have working in your home.’
