How can Ion Glass help with glass balustrades?

Glass is a complex product and when specified for something as integral as a structural balustrade it is essential to get expert advice to ensure the finished glass installation not only looks sensational but is also fully functional and compliant with all current regulations.

Why install a glass balustrade?

Glass balustrades are versatile enough to suit a wide variety of property styles, from commercial or residential to churches and heritage buildings. Internal and external glass balustrades can add dimension to the interior or exterior of your building. Glass gives designers, architects and homeowners the option to create more space and allow light to flow within and around a building without obscuring the structure of the building, the interior design or the view! Glass is a timeless material which is equally at home in a new build project or a centuries old church.

Do glass balustrades require a survey?

All glass balustrades require a full survey with an Ion site surveyor to ensure the correct type of glass and fixings are specified and that the final design is fully functional and compliant.

Do glass balustrades require templating?

In most cases templating is essential to ensure the glass is a perfect fit although Ion has developed a system of accurate laser surveying that avoids the need for templating in some installations. Some channel set glass balustrades rely on pre-determined measurements and don’t require templates.

Templating cannot take place until the site is ready for the glass installation as the measurements have to be wholly accurate – asking our surveyors to attend the site too early will result in additional survey costs.

Which glass thickness do you use?

Each installation is different! It depends on which glass balustrade type you are installing, whether or not it has a handrail, the size of the glass panels and where they are going to be installed. Ion will discuss and advise on the most appropriate glass thickness for your project, ensuring that the glass specified will be fully compliant.

What types of decorative glass are available?

Sandblasted Glass: textured glass, etched glass and frosted glass are all classed as sandblasted glass. This provides an opaque finish, allowing light to still pass through the glass balustrades. This glass treatment can also be applied to the glass in patterns, giving scope for partial obscurity or the inclusion of your own bespoke design or logo.

Tinted Glass: blue, bronze, green and grey transparent glass can be used for subtle colour statements.

Laminated Glass: a range of bespoke interlayers can be inserted between two pieces of glass to provide unique glass balustrades, for example you could choose high colour transparent interlayers, fabric interlayers, metal interlayers, or include your own bespoke artwork, company logo or message.

What sort of cost is involved with your glass balustrading – do you have a minimum charge?

All Ion glass balustrades are wholly bespoke, manufactured and installed to your individual requirements so costs are very situation specific and depend also on the type of balustrade you choose. As a general guide you should allow a minimum of £1000 per linear metre.
